Više od 2500 osoba poginulo je, tisuće su ozlijeđene i brojne nestale u snažnom potresu koji je u ponedjeljak rano ujutro pogodio jugoistočnu Tursku u blizini sirijske granice, u doba kada su mnogi stanovnici još bili u kućama i stanovima te spavali.

Potres, koji je pogodio područje grada Gaziantepa, pratili su i brojni naknadni udari, uključujući i onaj koji je bio gotovo jednako jak kao i prvi, glavni potres.

BBC je proveo analizu kojom pokušava odgovoriti na pitanja zašto je bio toliko jak i toliko smrtonosan.

Bio je to iznimno snažan potres od 7,8 stupnjeva, klasificiran kao ‘jak‘ na službenoj ljestvici magnitude. Udario je duž oko 100 kilometara linije rasjeda, uzrokujući golemu štetu na zgradama u blizini rasjeda.

Više od 200 godina bez jačeg potresa

No, nije samo snaga potresa ono što uzrokuje razaranje jer čvrstoća zgrada također je važan faktor.

"Otporna infrastruktura je, nažalost, dobrim dijelom rijetka u južnoj Turskoj, a posebno u Siriji, tako da se spašavanje života sada uglavnom svodi na reakciju. Iduća 24 sata ključna su za pronalazak preživjelih. Nakon 48 sati broj preživjelih enormno opada", kaže Carmen Solana, profesorica vulkanologije i komunikacija o riziku na Sveučilištu Portsmouth.

Radi se o regiji u kojoj više od 200 godina nije bilo jačeg potresa ili ikakvih znakova upozorenja, tako da je razina pripravnosti niža nego u regijama koje su navikle daleko se češće nositi s potresima.

Inače, do potresa dolazi zato što se zemljina kora sastoji se od zasebnih dijelova, zvanih ploča, koje se nalaze jedna uz drugu.

Te se ploče često pomiču, ali njihovo znatnije kretanje sprječava dodir među susjednim pločama, pri čemu nastaje trenje. No, ponekad pritisak raste sve dok se jedna ploča naglo ne provali iznad druge, uzrokujući pomicanje površine.

Strahovite posljedice potresa u Siriji

U ovom je slučaju to bila Arapska ploča, koja se kretala prema sjeveru i udarala u Anatolijsku ploču.

Trenje nastalo srazom ploča bilo je uzrok potresa u prošlosti na tom području koji su doveli do teških stradanja i šteta. Dana 13. kolovoza 1822. to je izazvalo potres magnitude 7,4 stupnjeva, znatno manje od magnitude 7,8 zabilježene u ponedjeljak ujutro.

Unatoč tome, potres iz 19. stoljeća rezultirao je golemom štetom u gradovima na tom području, sa 7000 smrtnih slučajeva zabilježenih samo u sirijskom gradu Alepu. Razarajući naknadni udari trajali su gotovo godinu dana.

Nakon potresa u ponedjeljak već je bilo više naknadnih potresa, a znanstvenici očekuju da će slijed događaja pratiti isti obrazac kao za i prethodnog velikog udara u toj regiji.

Sve iznad 8 stupnjeva može zbrisati cijele zajednice

Potresu se mjere na ljestvici koja se naziva ljestvica momenta magnitude (Mw). Ona je zamijenila poznatiju Richterovu ljestvicu, koja se sada smatra zastarjelom i manje preciznom.

Broj koji se pridaje potresu predstavlja kombinaciju udaljenosti koju je linija rasjeda pomaknula i sile koja ju je pomaknula.

Podrhtavanje od 2,5 ili manje obično se ne može osjetiti, ali se može detektirati instrumentima. Potresi jačine do pet osjete se i uzrokuju manju štetu. Turski potres jačine 7,8 klasificiran je kao jak i vrlo jak i takvi obično uzrokuju ozbiljnu štetu, kao što je u ovom slučaju i bilo.

Sve iznad 8 uzrokuje katastrofalnu štetu i može potpuno uništiti zajednice u središtu potresa.

Potres uz obalu Japana 2011. godine bio je magnitude 9 i izazvao je veliku štetu na kopnu te uzrokovao nastanak niza golemih plimnih valova, od kojih je jedan doveo do velike nesreće u nuklearnoj elektrani Fukushima uz obalu.

Najveći ikada potres iznosio je 9,5 stupnjeva i zabilježen je u Čileu 1960. godine.

Više od 2500 osoba poginulo je, tisuće su ozlijeđene i brojne nestale u snažnom potresu koji je u ponedjeljak rano ujutro pogodio jugoistočnu Tursku u blizini sirijske granice, u doba kada su mnogi stanovnici još bili u kućama i stanovima te spavali.

Potres, koji je pogodio područje grada Gaziantepa, pratili su i brojni naknadni udari, uključujući i onaj koji je bio gotovo jednako jak kao i prvi, glavni potres.

BBC je proveo analizu kojom pokušava odgovoriti na pitanja zašto je bio toliko jak i toliko smrtonosan.

Bio je to iznimno snažan potres od 7,8 stupnjeva, klasificiran kao ‘jak‘ na službenoj ljestvici magnitude. Udario je duž oko 100 kilometara linije rasjeda, uzrokujući golemu štetu na zgradama u blizini rasjeda.

"Od najsmrtonosnijih potresa u bilo kojoj godini, samo su dva u posljednjih 10 godina bila jednake magnitude, a četiri u prethodnih 10 godina", ističe Joanna Faure Walker, voditeljica Instituta za smanjenje rizika i katastrofa na Sveučilišnom koledžu u Londonu

Više od 200 godina bez jačeg potresa

No, nije samo snaga potresa ono što uzrokuje razaranje jer čvrstoća zgrada također je važan faktor.

"Otporna infrastruktura je, nažalost, dobrim dijelom rijetka u južnoj Turskoj, a posebno u Siriji, tako da se spašavanje života sada uglavnom svodi na reakciju. Iduća 24 sata ključna su za pronalazak preživjelih. Nakon 48 sati broj preživjelih enormno opada", kaže Carmen Solana, profesorica vulkanologije i komunikacija o riziku na Sveučilištu Portsmouth.

Radi se o regiji u kojoj više od 200 godina nije bilo jačeg potresa ili ikakvih znakova upozorenja, tako da je razina pripravnosti niža nego u regijama koje su navikle daleko se češće nositi s potresima.

Inače, do potresa dolazi zato što se zemljina kora sastoji se od zasebnih dijelova, zvanih ploča, koje se nalaze jedna uz drugu.

Te se ploče često pomiču, ali njihovo znatnije kretanje sprječava dodir među susjednim pločama, pri čemu nastaje trenje. No, ponekad pritisak raste sve dok se jedna ploča naglo ne provali iznad druge, uzrokujući pomicanje površine.

Strahovite posljedice potresa u Siriji

U ovom je slučaju to bila Arapska ploča, koja se kretala prema sjeveru i udarala u Anatolijsku ploču.

Trenje nastalo srazom ploča bilo je uzrok potresa u prošlosti na tom području koji su doveli do teških stradanja i šteta. Dana 13. kolovoza 1822. to je izazvalo potres magnitude 7,4 stupnjeva, znatno manje od magnitude 7,8 zabilježene u ponedjeljak ujutro.

Unatoč tome, potres iz 19. stoljeća rezultirao je golemom štetom u gradovima na tom području, sa 7000 smrtnih slučajeva zabilježenih samo u sirijskom gradu Alepu. Razarajući naknadni udari trajali su gotovo godinu dana.

Nakon potresa u ponedjeljak već je bilo više naknadnih potresa, a znanstvenici očekuju da će slijed događaja pratiti isti obrazac kao za i prethodnog velikog udara u toj regiji.

Sve iznad 8 stupnjeva može zbrisati cijele zajednice

Potresu se mjere na ljestvici koja se naziva ljestvica momenta magnitude (Mw). Ona je zamijenila poznatiju Richterovu ljestvicu, koja se sada smatra zastarjelom i manje preciznom.

Broj koji se pridaje potresu predstavlja kombinaciju udaljenosti koju je linija rasjeda pomaknula i sile koja ju je pomaknula.

Najveći ikada potres iznosio je 9,5 stupnjeva i zabilježen je u Čileu 1960. godine.

Više od 2500 osoba poginulo je, tisuće su ozlijeđene i brojne nestale u snažnom potresu koji je u ponedjeljak rano ujutro pogodio jugoistočnu Tursku u blizini sirijske granice, u doba kada su mnogi stanovnici još bili u kućama i stanovima te spavali.

Potres, koji je pogodio područje grada Gaziantepa, pratili su i brojni naknadni udari, uključujući i onaj koji je bio gotovo jednako jak kao i prvi, glavni potres.

BBC je proveo analizu kojom pokušava odgovoriti na pitanja zašto je bio toliko jak i toliko smrtonosan.

Bio je to iznimno snažan potres od 7,8 stupnjeva, klasificiran kao ‘jak‘ na službenoj ljestvici magnitude. Udario je duž oko 100 kilometara linije rasjeda, uzrokujući golemu štetu na zgradama u blizini rasjeda.
