Every week The Dubrovnik Times goes to new levels for your pleasure. This time it’s all about culinary pleasure. We have scoured the menus of Dubrovnik to bring you our favourites. And not only did we just research the menus we have gone that extra step and tasted the food in advance for you...its hard work but someone has to do it. This week it was the turn of Hotel Lapad, a hot destination for tourists over the past few years. I have eaten a few times in Hotel Lapad before; well I need to be more precise I have eaten quite a few desserts in Hotel Lapad over the years. If you have a sweet tooth then Hotel Lapad is probably already on your radar, they are renowned for the panna cotta, semifreddo and even have a signature dessert Lapad Cake. But apart from this I haven’t really eaten, well maybe at a function or two, anything serious. The setting is very pleasant. Hotel Lapad has a long and rich history and the stone façade of the building is proud and imposing. During the evening it looks even more impressive when lit up. And as the temperatures are unbearable during the day I would suggest visiting in the evening. The key to success is service, and the service is one of the best I have received in Dubrovnik. “I am not even going to look at the menu, you recommend something and I will bow to your judgment,” I said. They did exactly that, but with broad smiles and friendly words. People watching I could see that it wasn’t only me that was receiving “special treatment,” every other guest had a smile. I am not a great fan of hotel food. It is normally the three “Bs” - bland, boring and bad. However I was willing, as ever, to have a go at the a la carte restaurant in Hotel Lapad.Did she say mint sauce?“I suggest you start with a rose of roast beef and then as a main course grilled lamb cutlet with mint sauce,” smiled the waitress. My first thought was lamb and mint sauce in Dubrovnik…yummy! And to start with roast beef, heaven. Roast beef, very finely sliced on a bed of rocket with goat cheese shavings, great choice. In fact if anything the starter was too big. That might sound strange but it was, it looked like a main course. Would I have space left for the lamb…silly question! Again a huge serving, with roast potatoes and fennel, and it was delicious. Lots of lamb, although the mint sauce could have been better, maybe stronger, more of what I am used to in the UK. The dessert, I went for my favourite dessert, semifreddo, was up to Hotel Lapad standards. All in all a very nice evening and experience, far away from the three “Bs,” although my advice is not to eat too much through the day as the portions are huge.
