Meta je u utorak počela blokirati Kanađanima pristup vijestima na Facebooku i Instagramu kao odgovor na novi zakon koji zahtijeva od digitalnih divova da plaćaju izdavačima za takav sadržaj.

Google je rekao da razmatra sličan potez u sklopu tekuće globalne rasprave jer sve više vlada pokušava natjerati tehnološke tvrtke da plaćaju za sadržaj vijesti.

"Poveznice na vijesti i sadržaj više neće biti vidljivi ljudima u Kanadi", rekla je Meta u izjavi.

Vijesti objavljene na stranim stranicama također neće biti vidljive kanadskim korisnicima Facebooka i Instagrama te više neće moći dijeliti članke na te dvije platforme.

Meta je napomenula da će se promjene koje počinju u utorak provoditi "tijekom sljedećih nekoliko tjedana".

Novinar AFP-a još uvijek je mogao vidjeti vijesti na Facebooku u utorak, ali neki su korisnici izvijestili da su već dobili poruke u kojima piše da je takav sadržaj blokiran.

Zakon o online vijestima temelji se na sličnom zakonodavstvu uvedenom u Australiji i ima za cilj podržati posrnuli kanadski sektor vijesti koji je doživio gašenje stotina publikacija u posljednjem desetljeću.

Zahtijeva se da digitalni divovi sklope poštene komercijalne ugovore za vijesti i informacije koje se dijele na njihovim platformama ili se suoče s obvezujućom arbitražom.

Izvješće kanadskog parlamentarnog nadzornika proračuna iz listopada 2022. procjenjuje da bi zakon mogao dovesti do toga da kanadske novine dobiju oko 250 milijuna američkih dolara godišnje od digitalnih platformi.

Meta je rekla da je prijedlog zakona manjkav i da se temelji na "netočnoj premisi da Meta nepravedno ima koristi od sadržaja vijesti koji se dijeli na platformama, dok je obrnuto istina."

Umjesto toga, navodi se, novinske kuće dijele sadržaj na Facebooku i Instagramu kako bi privukle čitatelje, što pomaže njihovim vlastitim rezultatima.

"Ljudi koji koriste naše platforme ne dolaze k nama zbog vijesti", dodaje se.

Ministrica kulturne baštine Pascale St-Onge nazvala je potez blokiranja vijesti "neodgovornim", napominjući da 80 posto svih prihoda od online oglašavanja u Kanadi ide Meti i Googleu.

"Slobodan i neovisan tisak temelj je naše demokracije", rekla je, dodajući da druge zemlje razmatraju uvođenje sličnih zakona "kako bi se uhvatile u koštac s istim izazovima".

Kanadska javna radio televizija (CBC) kritizirala je Metin potez kao "neodgovoran i kao zloporabu tržišne moći". CBC je "pozvao Metu da se ponaša odgovorno vraćajući Kanađanima pristup vijestima".

No neki kanadski mediji zauzeli su složeniji stav.

Prošlog mjeseca uvodnik u vodećim novinama Globe and Mail sugerirao je da prijedlog zakona "iskrivljuje tržište štiteći određene tvrtke od stvarnosti".

Umjesto toga, poziva se na porezne olakšice za čitatelje koji se pretplate na usluge online vijesti, tvrdeći da bi takav potez "pogurao redakcije na inovacije" i stavio odluku o tome tko će dobiti financijsku potporu u ruke čitatelja.

Australski Kodeks pregovaranja o novim medijima bio je prvi u svijetu kada je uveden 2021. kako bi Google i Meta plaćali za sadržaj vijesti na svojim platformama.

U početku je doživio značajan otpor obje tvrtke jer su se bojale da će ugroziti njihove poslovne modele, ali zakonodavci su ga s amandmanima lako usvojili.

Meta je u utorak počela blokirati Kanađanima pristup vijestima na Facebooku i Instagramu kao odgovor na novi zakon koji zahtijeva od digitalnih divova da plaćaju izdavačima za takav sadržaj.

Google je rekao da razmatra sličan potez u sklopu tekuće globalne rasprave jer sve više vlada pokušava natjerati tehnološke tvrtke da plaćaju za sadržaj vijesti.

"Poveznice na vijesti i sadržaj više neće biti vidljivi ljudima u Kanadi", rekla je Meta u izjavi.

Vijesti objavljene na stranim stranicama također neće biti vidljive kanadskim korisnicima Facebooka i Instagrama te više neće moći dijeliti članke na te dvije platforme.

Meta je napomenula da će se promjene koje počinju u utorak provoditi "tijekom sljedećih nekoliko tjedana".

Novinar AFP-a još uvijek je mogao vidjeti vijesti na Facebooku u utorak, ali neki su korisnici izvijestili da su već dobili poruke u kojima piše da je takav sadržaj blokiran.

Zakon o online vijestima temelji se na sličnom zakonodavstvu uvedenom u Australiji i ima za cilj podržati posrnuli kanadski sektor vijesti koji je doživio gašenje stotina publikacija u posljednjem desetljeću.

Zahtijeva se da digitalni divovi sklope poštene komercijalne ugovore za vijesti i informacije koje se dijele na njihovim platformama ili se suoče s obvezujućom arbitražom.

Izvješće kanadskog parlamentarnog nadzornika proračuna iz listopada 2022. procjenjuje da bi zakon mogao dovesti do toga da kanadske novine dobiju oko 250 milijuna američkih dolara godišnje od digitalnih platformi.

Meta je rekla da je prijedlog zakona manjkav i da se temelji na "netočnoj premisi da Meta nepravedno ima koristi od sadržaja vijesti koji se dijeli na platformama, dok je obrnuto istina."

Umjesto toga, navodi se, novinske kuće dijele sadržaj na Facebooku i Instagramu kako bi privukle čitatelje, što pomaže njihovim vlastitim rezultatima.

"Ljudi koji koriste naše platforme ne dolaze k nama zbog vijesti", dodaje se.

Ministrica kulturne baštine Pascale St-Onge nazvala je potez blokiranja vijesti "neodgovornim", napominjući da 80 posto svih prihoda od online oglašavanja u Kanadi ide Meti i Googleu.

"Slobodan i neovisan tisak temelj je naše demokracije", rekla je, dodajući da druge zemlje razmatraju uvođenje sličnih zakona "kako bi se uhvatile u koštac s istim izazovima".

Kanadska javna radio televizija (CBC) kritizirala je Metin potez kao "neodgovoran i kao zloporabu tržišne moći". CBC je "pozvao Metu da se ponaša odgovorno vraćajući Kanađanima pristup vijestima".

No neki kanadski mediji zauzeli su složeniji stav.

Prošlog mjeseca uvodnik u vodećim novinama Globe and Mail sugerirao je da prijedlog zakona "iskrivljuje tržište štiteći određene tvrtke od stvarnosti".

Umjesto toga, poziva se na porezne olakšice za čitatelje koji se pretplate na usluge online vijesti, tvrdeći da bi takav potez "pogurao redakcije na inovacije" i stavio odluku o tome tko će dobiti financijsku potporu u ruke čitatelja.

Australski Kodeks pregovaranja o novim medijima bio je prvi u svijetu kada je uveden 2021. kako bi Google i Meta plaćali za sadržaj vijesti na svojim platformama.

U početku je doživio značajan otpor obje tvrtke jer su se bojale da će ugroziti njihove poslovne modele, ali zakonodavci su ga s amandmanima lako usvojili.
