Hrvatska endemska vrsta školjkaša, dinarski špiljski školjkaš Congeria kusceri jedini je poznati podzemni školjkaš na svijetu. Ova mala školjkica koja, obitavajući u izoliranim krškim podzemnim sustavima Hrvatske i Bosne i Hercegovine, uspješno svladava socijalno distanciranje već pet milijuna godina, preživjela je okolišne promjene koje su dovele do izumiranja svih ostalih vrsta Congeria. Iz tih je razloga prepoznata kao izvanredna vrsta te je ušla u finale izbora za mekušca 2021. godine, koji provode Istraživački institut i muzej Senckenberg i Centar za translacijsku i genomsku bioraznolikost (TBG) u Frankfurtu.
Sada je taj rijetki, endemski školjaš u utrci za "mekušca godine"! Naime, Congeria kusceri ušala je u izbor "top pet" mekušaca od čak 120 prijavljenih. Danas se Congeria nalazi na Crvenom popisu špiljske faune Hrvatske, u kategoriji kritično ugrožene vrste, a na europskoj razini štiti je Direktiva o zaštiti prirodnih staništa i divlje faune i flore Europske unije. Kao i mnoge druge špiljske životinje, i Congeria kusceri razvila je brojne prilagodbe za život u špiljama. Među najistaknutijima su gubitak pigmentacije i osjetila vida, promjene u životnom ciklusu i načinu razmnožavanja te povećana dugovječnost. Naime, Congeria kusceri živi 25 puta dulje od svojih najbližih nadzemnih srodnika).
Školjkaš Congeria kusceri je ostatak faune koja je živjela u tercijaru i preživjela do današnjih dana spustivši se u podzemlje. Tako je odoljela promjenama na površini zbog kojih su druge vrste roda Congeria izumrle. Cijeli rod se smatrao izumrlim, sve do 1934. godine kada su ljušture ovih školjkaša pronađene u izvoru Stinjevac kod Vrgorca u Dalmaciji. Na temelju njih je slovenski malakolog Ljudevit Kušcer pretpostavio da Congeria živi u dubinama podzemlja. Prve žive primjerke pronašao je Jože Štirn u ponoru Žira na Popovu polju u Hercegovini, a 1962. godine je slovenski malakolog Jože Bole opisao novu vrstu - Congeria kusceri.
Do danas je ovaj školjkaš, veličine oko dva centimetra, nađen na svega petnaestak podzemnih lokacija Dinarskog krša u Sloveniji, Hrvatskoj i Bosni i Hercegovini. Znanstvenice Instituta Ruđer Bošković (IRB) bile su dio tima hrvatskih biospelologa koji je 2013. godine opisao još dvije, za znanost nove vrste, ovog školjkaša u podzemnim vodama Dinarskog krša.
Ovu zvijezdu među mekušcima u hrvatskoj proučava istraživačka grupa koju u sklopu Laboratorija za molekularnu genetiku Instituta Ruđer Bošković (IRB) vodi dr. sc. Helena Bilandžija.
- Naše istraživanje usredotočeno je na gubitak melaninske pigmentacije. Cilj nam je identificirati molekularne mehanizme koji su doveli do albinizma i razumjeti njegove evolucijske implikacije. Kako bismo to postigli, uspoređujemo tri vrste špiljskih školjkaša s njihovim blisko povezanim površinskim organizmima kao što je raznolika trokutnjača Dreissena polymorpha. Za razliku od špiljskih, površinske Dreissenide su široko rasprostranjene i ozloglašene invazivne vrste. U drugoj fazi istraživanja fokusirat ćemo se na molekularne promjene povezane sa specijalizacijom na podzemni način života i gubitkom invazivnosti koje su se dogodile unutar roda Congeria''- objašnjava voditeljica istraživanja u Laboratorija za molekularnu genetiku IRB-a dr. sc. Helena Bilandžija.
-Osim što bi titula 'Mekušca godine' bila dodatno priznanje ovoj jedinstvenoj hrvatskoj endemskoj vrsti te joj osigurala medijsku pozornost u međunarodnoj zoološkoj zajednici, našem timu pobjeda bi osigurala i vrijednu nagradu – besplatno sekvenciranje genoma ove vrste. Genom bi bio izrazito značajan doprinos i temelj budućih istraživanja ovog školjkaša- naglasila je doktorandica Magdalena Grgić te pozvala svih na glasanje.

Hrvatska endemska vrsta školjkaša, dinarski špiljski školjkaš Congeria kusceri jedini je poznati podzemni školjkaš na svijetu. Ova mala školjkica koja, obitavajući u izoliranim krškim podzemnim sustavima Hrvatske i Bosne i Hercegovine, uspješno svladava socijalno distanciranje već pet milijuna godina, preživjela je okolišne promjene koje su dovele do izumiranja svih ostalih vrsta Congeria. Iz tih je razloga prepoznata kao izvanredna vrsta te je ušla u finale izbora za mekušca 2021. godine, koji provode Istraživački institut i muzej Senckenberg i Centar za translacijsku i genomsku bioraznolikost (TBG) u Frankfurtu.
Sada je taj rijetki, endemski školjaš u utrci za "mekušca godine"! Naime, Congeria kusceri ušala je u izbor "top pet" mekušaca od čak 120 prijavljenih. Danas se Congeria nalazi na Crvenom popisu špiljske faune Hrvatske, u kategoriji kritično ugrožene vrste, a na europskoj razini štiti je Direktiva o zaštiti prirodnih staništa i divlje faune i flore Europske unije. Kao i mnoge druge špiljske životinje, i Congeria kusceri razvila je brojne prilagodbe za život u špiljama. Među najistaknutijima su gubitak pigmentacije i osjetila vida, promjene u životnom ciklusu i načinu razmnožavanja te povećana dugovječnost. Naime, Congeria kusceri živi 25 puta dulje od svojih najbližih nadzemnih srodnika).
Školjkaš Congeria kusceri je ostatak faune koja je živjela u tercijaru i preživjela do današnjih dana spustivši se u podzemlje. Tako je odoljela promjenama na površini zbog kojih su druge vrste roda Congeria izumrle. Cijeli rod se smatrao izumrlim, sve do 1934. godine kada su ljušture ovih školjkaša pronađene u izvoru Stinjevac kod Vrgorca u Dalmaciji. Na temelju njih je slovenski malakolog Ljudevit Kušcer pretpostavio da Congeria živi u dubinama podzemlja. Prve žive primjerke pronašao je Jože Štirn u ponoru Žira na Popovu polju u Hercegovini, a 1962. godine je slovenski malakolog Jože Bole opisao novu vrstu - Congeria kusceri.
Do danas je ovaj školjkaš, veličine oko dva centimetra, nađen na svega petnaestak podzemnih lokacija Dinarskog krša u Sloveniji, Hrvatskoj i Bosni i Hercegovini. Znanstvenice Instituta Ruđer Bošković (IRB) bile su dio tima hrvatskih biospelologa koji je 2013. godine opisao još dvije, za znanost nove vrste, ovog školjkaša u podzemnim vodama Dinarskog krša.
Ovu zvijezdu među mekušcima u hrvatskoj proučava istraživačka grupa koju u sklopu Laboratorija za molekularnu genetiku Instituta Ruđer Bošković (IRB) vodi dr. sc. Helena Bilandžija.
- Naše istraživanje usredotočeno je na gubitak melaninske pigmentacije. Cilj nam je identificirati molekularne mehanizme koji su doveli do albinizma i razumjeti njegove evolucijske implikacije. Kako bismo to postigli, uspoređujemo tri vrste špiljskih školjkaša s njihovim blisko povezanim površinskim organizmima kao što je raznolika trokutnjača Dreissena polymorpha. Za razliku od špiljskih, površinske Dreissenide su široko rasprostranjene i ozloglašene invazivne vrste. U drugoj fazi istraživanja fokusirat ćemo se na molekularne promjene povezane sa specijalizacijom na podzemni način života i gubitkom invazivnosti koje su se dogodile unutar roda Congeria''- objašnjava voditeljica istraživanja u Laboratorija za molekularnu genetiku IRB-a dr. sc. Helena Bilandžija.
-Osim što bi titula 'Mekušca godine' bila dodatno priznanje ovoj jedinstvenoj hrvatskoj endemskoj vrsti te joj osigurala medijsku pozornost u međunarodnoj zoološkoj zajednici, našem timu pobjeda bi osigurala i vrijednu nagradu – besplatno sekvenciranje genoma ove vrste. Genom bi bio izrazito značajan doprinos i temelj budućih istraživanja ovog školjkaša- naglasila je doktorandica Magdalena Grgić te pozvala svih na glasanje.
